Free electricity up to 300 units every month
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India scheme (Ministry of New & Renewable Energy) that helps households install rooftop solar systems. In return, households get free electricity for up to 300 units per month — and any extra solar power exported to the grid earns credits on the electricity bill through net metering.

Who Can Apply
Eligibility for households

Residential consumers
The scheme is for homes — the applicant must have an existing electricity connection in the household's name.

System size 1–10 kW
Rooftop solar capacity between 1 kW and 10 kW is covered under the scheme.

Suitable rooftop
RCC or tin-shed roof with good, unobstructed sunlight through the day — confirmed during a free site visit.

Application on the portal
Apply through the national portal or your state DISCOM's portal with your consumer number and electricity bill.
How It Works
Application process, step by step

Register on the portal
Visit the official PM Surya Ghar portal, select your state and DISCOM, and register with your consumer number, mobile number and email.

Choose a vendor & get a quote
Select a registered vendor from the portal's vendor list. A free site visit confirms feasibility, and the vendor shares the quotation.

Installation
The vendor installs the rooftop system — panels, inverter, structure, wiring and earthing — using approved components.

Inspection & net meter
The DISCOM inspects the installation, installs or replaces the net meter, and commissions the plant.

Subsidy credited
Once commissioned, the subsidy amount is transferred directly to the applicant's bank account (DBT) within the scheme's timelines.
